Questions 4.4.1(c)

Describe how you would prepare iron (II) sulphate from iron metal dust and a suitable dilute acid. Include an equation for the reaction.

Answers to Questions 4.4.1(c)

Warm about 50 ml of dilute sulphuric in a glass beaker.

Add iron dust in small quantities, stirring with a glass rod till a small excess of the iron dust remains unreacted.

Equation: Fe(s) + H2SO4(aq)   ⟶   FeSO4(aq)   +   H2(g)

Filter off the excess iron dust.

Heat the solution to saturate it. Then allow it to cool and crystallize.

Filter off the mother liquor and mop the crystals dry.
