Methane can be prepared by reacting sodium ethanoate (CH3COONa) with sodalime (NaOH). Both are solids and heating is required.

  1. Comment on the solubility of methane in water.
  2. Sodium ethanoate (with 2 carbon atoms) gives methane (with 1 carbon atom). Which salt, X, of sodium would give us ethane (with 2 carbon atoms) when reacted with sodalime?
  3. Write an equation for the formation of ethane gas when X is reacted with sodalime.
