Simple Classification of Substances and Separation of Mixtures: Kinetic theory of matter

2.0 Simple Classification of Substances and Separation of Mixtures

2.11 Kinetic theory of matter

We established in Section 1.3 that matter consists of tiny invisible particles (particulate theory). These particles are in continuous motion (Section 1.4; kinetic theory). Kinetic means to do with motion.

In liquids and gases, particles move randomly; but in solids they vibrate at fixed positions. The spacing and arrangement of particles differ in solids, liquids and gases (Section 1.5). We now use this knowledge to explain behavior of solids, liquids and gases in Sections 2.12 and 2.13.
