Questions 6.3
- State the colour and smell of chlorine gas.
- Comment on the solubility of chlorine in water.
- By comparing Relative Molecular Masses (RMM), show that chlorine (Cl2) is about two times denser than air. (Cl = 35.5; N = 14; O = 16; ignore rare gases.)
Answers to Questions 6.3
- Chlorine is pale yellow-green in colour, and it has a chocking and irritating smell.
- RMM of Cl2 = 35.5x2 = 71. This is about two times the average RMM of air, which is between 28 (for N2) and 32 (for O2).
- Chlorine is slightly soluble in water (That is how it forms HOCl(aq) and HCl(aq) with water).
