Questions 5.4.1(a)
- From the demonstration, state with reason whether hydrogen sulphide is acidic or basic.
- What is the evidence that hydrogen sulphide reacts with water?
Answers to Questions 5.4.1(a)
- Hydrogen sulphide is acidic; its pH is below 7, because it turns blue litmus red.
- The turning of blue litmus red, which indicates acidity (or presence of hydrogen ions (H+)), is evidence that the gas has reacted with water to form an acid. It does not occur with dry hydrogen sulphide gas.
