Figure 5.1: Sulphur and some of its compounds

Sulphur is the 5th most abundant element on the earth. Although it is found chemically combined in natural compounds, it also exists as a free element (sulphur deposits) both above and at some depths below the earth,s surface.

Questions 5.1

From the brief introduction, and your knowledge of the Periodic Table,

  1. Comment about the reactivity of sulphur.
  2. Suggest a reason why sulphur is found both as a free element and in combined state with other elements.
  3. Identify one other non-metal around us that is fairly reactive but also exists both as a free element and in chemical compounds.
  4. Of the two sources: free element and combined sulphur, which one would be more suitable for extracting sulphur? Explain your answer.
  5. The atomic number of sulphur is 16. What is its electronic configuration? To which Group of the Periodic Table does sulphur belong?
