Questions 5.2.3

  1. Comment on the pH of sulphur (IV) oxide.
  2. In what way is sulphur (IV) oxide similar to chlorine gas?
  3. Write an equation for the reaction between sulphur (IV) and water. (Hint: They combine directly, forming one product.)
  4. Name and state the formula of the acid formed when sulphur (IV) oxide dissolves in water.
  5. What is the effect of this acid on litmus paper and dyes?
  6. Write an equation for the action of the acid on a Dye. (Hint: It removes oxygen from the dye. Represent the dye as Dye+O, because it has oxygen in it.)
  7. How does this action differ from that of chlorine?

Answers to Questions 5.2.3

Any material bleached by reduction (removal of oxygen) gains oxygen from the air; so its dull original colour is slowly restored (B). But bleaching by oxidation is permanent (A).
