Chlorine and its Compounds: Oxidizing properties of chlorine

6.0 Chlorine and its Compounds

6.5 Oxidizing properties of chlorine

It oxidizes sulphite ions to sulphate ions.
2SO32-(aq) + Cl2(g) + 2H2O(l) → 2Cl-(aq) + 4H+(aq)+ 2SO42-(aq).

It oxidizes iron (II) ions to iron (III) ions.
Fe2+(aq) + Cl2(g) → Fe3+(aq) + 2Cl-(aq)

It oxidizes hydrodgen sulphide to sulphur and hydrogen chloride gas.
H2S(g) + Cl2(g) → S(s) + 2HCl(g)

It oxidizes bromide ions to bromine.
2Br-(aq) + Cl2(g) → Br2(s) + 2Cl-(aq)

It oxidizes iodide ions to iodine.
2I-(aq) + Cl2(g) → I2(s) + 2Cl-(aq)
