4.0 Nitrogen and its Compounds

4.7 Summary on nitrogen and its compounds

Questions 4.7

  1. Prepare a one-page summary for the topic, nitrogen and its compounds. Refer to "Answers to Questions" sections where you find it necessary.
  2. Explain the chemical tests and results to confirm presence of:
    1. Ammonia gas (NH3)
    2. Nitrogen (I) oxide (N2O)
    3. Nitrogen (II) oxide (NO)
    4. Nitrates (or nitrate ions, NO3-)
  3. Construct a flow diagram (reaction scheme) to represent the chemical reactions involving preparation and reactions of ammonia gas and its aqueous solution.

4.7 Project 4

Nitrogen makes up 78% of the air. It dilutes the active air, and therefore controls burning. A curious student wants to know if there is a cut-off percentage of nitrogen above which a wooden splint would not burn. Advise the student on how they should go about the investigation.
